DDoS extortion against online casinos: how proactive hardening works

Why casinos are the preferred target

Three reasons, none of them technical. Revenue is time-sensitive: an hour offline during a major event is lost turnover that does not come back. Players are mobile: a site that does not load sends them to a competitor in seconds. And many operators — especially crypto-casinos — are reluctant to involve authorities, which the extortionists know. The result is a sector where DDoS-for-ransom is a business model, not an occasional event.

What "proactive" means

Reactive DDoS defense is calling your provider while the site is down. Proactive hardening means that when the flood starts, the edge already knows what to do and your team already knows who does what. Four pieces:

1. Edge in front of everything. The origin must not be reachable directly. If your server's IP is discoverable (old DNS records, mail headers, a forgotten subdomain pointing straight to it), the edge is decoration. SWR7's passive checks look for exactly this.
2. A configuration tuned for your traffic. Security level, bot handling, rate limits on the endpoints that matter (login, deposit, bet placement), caching for what can be cached. The defaults are generic; your platform is not.
3. A learned baseline. "Attack" is a statement about deviation. SWR7 measures requests per minute and latency per site over weeks and proposes thresholds that sit far above your legitimate peaks — a shared article, a newsletter, a derby — so that alarms mean something.
4. An under-attack runbook. Who is notified, what gets switched (up to Cloudflare's Under Attack Mode, which challenges every new visitor), which sources get blocked, and how you roll back when the wave passes. Written down, rehearsed once.

What SWR7 does during an attack

The monitoring layer watches two signals from the outside: the request rate your edge reports and the latency your site shows to an external probe. When both cross the learned thresholds and the reading is confirmed on a second pass, your operators are alerted within minutes with the numbers, not adjectives — and with the runbook step that applies: raise the edge security level (up to Under Attack Mode), block the top sources, roll back when traffic normalizes. On your edge SWR7 proposes, it does not switch: the hand on the lever is yours, and the runbook is what makes that hand fast.

False alarms are treated as a defect, not as caution: a threshold that fires on a shared article trains everyone to ignore the pager. The baseline is reviewed monthly and every proposed threshold change is shown to you before it is applied.

What it does not do

SWR7 is not a scrubbing center and does not replace your CDN or edge provider. It makes sure the protection you already pay for is configured, armed and rehearsed, and it is the pair of eyes that notices when it stops working — including when the reason is your own deploy.
